Mei Garden Santa Cruz - Reviews:

Positive Mei Garden Santa Cruz Review:

Mei Garden has very decent Chinese food. It is definitely edible, and definitely good. Specifically, I come here solely for the General Chicken lunch special, named for tender bits of chicken breast fried in batter then immersed in a flavorful sauce with just a hint of kick. This chicken is the best thing I've had here, and I don't really intend on experimenting any time soon. Remember, the chicken is fabulous; the fried rice is mediocre. However, it is very important to note that you get a good-sized serving of the Asian staple (I estimate 2 1/2 cups).

Pricing is very good. For $5.75 + tax, this lunch special comes with tea, soup of the day, a cream cheese wonton thing, and a slice of watermelon. I pay the extra dollar or whatever to upgrade my steamed rice to pork fried rice, and I have- at least once- managed to convince my server to substitute more cream cheese wontons for the soup).

The environment has somewhat recently been upgraded. In the place of booths, the restaurant has been retrofitted with numerous four person tables and chairs. However, the removal of the booths and management of plant life outside has resulted in a far roomier, brighter feeling room. The servers are very polite and prompt, and their English isn't bad. Note for customers. "Thank You" is "Xie Xie," which is pronounced "shiyeh shiyeh"

End verdict: food is cheap, chicken is good, fried rice is decent, servers do well. tip accordingly. xie xie

Negative Mei Garden Santa Cruz Review:

After a period of time not eating at Mei Garden, about a year ago we began occasionally ordering take-out from them. The take-out service is excellent. The food arrives promptly and the drivers are always polite and upbeat. The owners of the restaurant are very nice. However, the food is mediocre at best, inedible at worst. Last night we had inedible. The General Chicken was just plain gross. The first 4 pieces I got were chicken skin, no meat. Yuck! The Vegetable Chow Mein consisted of overcooked noodles, 2 pieces of broccoli, and a couple of onion and zucchini pieces. It was literally tasteless.  We won't be ordering from this restaurant again.

Average Mei Garden Santa Cruz Review:

when first entering the restaurant, when service is slow, sometimes they don't have anybody in the front. i hate that about this restaurant! the workers are usually at the back, eating and socializing. sometimes it takes them awhile to see that they have customers. it's a waste waiting for service. one time, for pick-up, i stood in front of the restaurant for ten minutes, waiting and not knowing what to do!

their decor is pretty tacky. looks pretty old too. it's not a very presentable place if you want to go eat somewhere special.

however, when i want chinese food in santa cruz, specifically hunan chicken, i go here! there is not a good chinese place anywhere in sc, but this one is one of the best in the area for its food. i especially aim to go during lunch hours because their lunch menu gives affordable prices for their dishes. it comes with soup too! they give a good portion of rice and mea
