Takara Capitola Santa Cruz - Reviews:

Positive Takara Capitola Santa Cruz Review:

I'm a huge sushi fan, and while Takara doesn't have the best sushi in the world, it is very good.  Probably the main reason I go to Takara over some of the other sushi places in the area is that I really like their atmosphere (and they have the best salad dressing that I've found at any local sushi place).  You never feel crowded even when their busy because most of their tables are pretty private booths, and the decorations and lighting really make the place something special. Their service has always been good when I've been there, and there prices are pretty good.

Negative Takara Capitola Santa Cruz Review:

okay so i signed up for yelp just to say that Takara is horrible, do not eat there. 10 years ago it was good, now, awful. Especially the sashimi which is not sashimi grade and horribly cut. I complained but was offered no reconciliation. It was a sad waste of $40 in these hard times when sushi lunches are few and far between (normally we spend more but decided to leave still hungry...).  We've given them a chance every so often over the last few years but it just gets worse and worse. I think the only reason they're in business is the location at the mall. The waitress was pleasant but so what, we came for sushi not bait and a smile.

Average Takara Capitola Santa Cruz Review:

I have eaten at Takaras two times before my visit last night. We came a little after 8 and the place was packed. For a large size restaurant i was surprised that they were that crowded. Luckily for us (my gf and i) we did not have to wait to be seated. The atmosphere of the place was very different from much of the Japanese restaurant in the Santa Cruz area, they had a live band playing traditional Hawaiian music. Takara's seems to be very infused with Hawaiian influence everything from their decor to the menu (seems like half of the maki rolls contain macadamian nuts). When we sat down our water and hot towels were served immediately but it took a good 10 minutes before our waitress checked up on us. It was understandable because they were so crowded. Their menu contained a good amount of choices for vegetarians but we stuck to: Spicy Tuna roll, Spicy Cilantro roll, nutty shrimp roll,  Una Mango roll, and a soft shell crab appetizer. I would recommend the untraditional Una Mango roll if you're not looking for authentic Japanese rolls. The spicy cilantro roll was probably my second favorite roll with chopped cilantro and jalapino peppers mixed with imitation crab. The spicy tuna roll was hardly "spicy" and the nutty shrimp roll which was tempura shrimp and macadamian nuts was probably my least favorite. The flavor just wasn't there.

Overall Takaras provided a nice atmosphere mixed with mediocre food with slightly above average prices. Nothing worth raving about but  i'll probably visit again if I'm looking for Sushi on 41st.
